answer:
A ronin is actually a masterless samurai from Feudal times. Ronin were not looked well upon as they were a "disruptive influence on society". (Warning! PC statement!) They often resorted to thievery to support themselves.
It is now used to refer to students who have failed the university entrance exams and are studying to get in next year.
