Detective Azusa-chan

Café Trivia

Taiho Shichauzo!

(You're Under Arrest!)

question:

In episode 1, Natsumi throws a coin offering at the temple. How much did she give?

answer:

Traditionally, you would normally throw a ¥5 coin into the offering boxes. (which is what Natsumi threw.) Coins come in ¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥50, ¥100 and more recently, ¥500 denominations. The ¥5 and ¥50 coins have a hole in the middle. My aunt taught me that ¥1 is insulting, ¥5 is expected, ¥10 brings twice as much luck, but ¥50 is a foolish waste of money.

One other reason why ¥5 coins are used: goen also means "good luck".
