hinomaru

  1. "The Rising Sun"

The name of the accepted Japanese national flag. "Accepted," since hinomaru is not officially recognised as the nation's flag. (Similarily, there is no "official" Japanese national anthem.)

The flag itself dates back to the Age of Civil Wars, and was declared the national flag on January 27, 1870 by the government, but pressure on the government by opposition parties after World War II has left the status of this flag in doubt. There has been recent flaps over the recognition of this flag in schools in Japan.
