[ plot summary ]

An annual summer matsuri brings out the local residents to the Masaki temple grounds, which hosts the festival. Even the new residents of the Masaki household are helping out -- but not quite in the traditional manner. Ayeka's shooting gallery features very credible likenesses of Ryoko as target dolls -- so much so that Ayeka brings out her automatic cork gun to have a shot at the targets. Ryoko's goldfish catching booth doesn't seem to be having very much success, and suffers a serious setback when it's shut down for safety reasons. Mihoshi and Kiyone open up a yaki-soba stand, only to have Mishoshi's artistic cabbage chopping and Ryo-Ohki's prediliction for eating the goods force them to close shop. Their stint with the Washu-designed candy floss machine doesn't fare very well, either. And speaking of Washu -- never, ever venture into a house of horrors designed by a mad scientist!

[ capsule review ]

It's not unusual in the more traditional Japanese households to see once specific person in charge of all the domestic chores. Usually, it's the mother, but in the Masaki household, Sasami gets the job. This episode is a "break for Sasami" episode, very much like what we saw for Manami in KOR. Sasami, the cook and general housekeeper of the Masaki home in the TV series, gets a night out where she doesn't have to do any work. But considering what the others are doing, she probably wishes that she stayed home. I thought that Ayeka's shooting gallery was very cute -- I want one of those automatic cork guns! Beyond the typical "let's have fun at the festival" stuff, there's not much substance here. Ryoko plays the part of a shuckster, and when that flops, Ayeka and Ryoko get into another fight; this time after Ryoko sets up a shooting gallery right next to Ayeka's... Guess what her targets look like? Even Washu's house of horrors didn't hold any interest for me. Yawn. - AN
