Monthly Picks

September 2001

Many folks out there have often asked what anime we suggest for those who are starting out in anime, or what anime would be good for those who like x, y, and z titles. While I usually suggest that people go to the Beginner's Guide to Anime for suggestions, here I'm going to give my personal choice for the month based on the videos that I watch. Some of the titles are new acquisitions while others are re-views. (compared to reviews of course!) So, on to the picks!

Top Video

Rurouni Kenshin TV Series

While I have to go back and fix some of the earlier reviews, the Kyoto arc (from ep 28-62) of this series can truly be a gripping watch. With strong story telling and solid direction, it will keep viewers firmly glued.

Most Intriguing Beginning

Chikyu Shoujo Arjuna

This series has me very intrigued with its environmentally aware beginnings, the animation and story strike a chord especially for those of us who grew up in the city. How this will pan out remains to be seen.

Noteworthy for kids

Jungle wa Itsumo Hare nochi Guu

With a very tongue in cheek style humour, fast paced action and gags, there's lots for kids to watch and enjoy in this program. Whether it will continue to deliver waits to be seen. All in all good fun for the family.

Emptiest Eye Candy

X Yocho

With beautiful animation and good direction, oddly enough there is virtually no story to this OAV. Rather, it comes across as a 30 minute TV commercial / advertisement for the upcoming TV series. Very pretty to watch, but there's nothing there.
