T.H.E.M. Animé Café Awards
1998 Edition

No. 5:

Macross Plus OAV series

T.H.E.M. The Café

I've always found the Macross series to be a little on the hokey side, myself, but Macross Plus has made me seriously rethink my take on the Macross universe. Every element of Macross that has made it popular with fans -- the lightning mecha action, the infamous love triangle, and the war-stopping power of a song -- is integrated into Macross Plus and brought to a new transcendent level, complete with spectacular animation and seamlessly incorporated computer graphics. Now _this_ is what Macross has always tried to be, and now is, thanks to this OAV series.

T.H.E.M. Anime Reviews:

  • Macross Plus
  • Incredible mix of cel-animation coupled with computer-generated imagery, you won't find a better example of air-to-air combat sequences anywhere. The eye-popping animation is supported by an underlying story populated by characters you can believe in, and care about -- this may very well be the definitive mecha series. Don't bother with the movie version, the OAV series is a far superior production.
