[The Crystal Kyoko]

T.H.E.M. Animé Café Awards
1998 Edition

Honourable Mentions:

Several titles didn't make the list for various reasons -- most commonly because one of our two sites didn't get a chance to properly review every show. (Well, hey, we still have our own lives to live, you know!) Here's a list of shows that just didn't make the cut-off -- because Raphael had not been able to review the show...

Omoide Poro Poro
(Only Yesterday)
This beautifully realised movie explores one woman's voyage of self-discovery, and what she truly wants in her life. It's a quiet, gentle story full of hope and promise -- one that many adults will be able to relate to, whether you're thirty or seventy. Combined with a most varied soundtrack and some stunning scenery, this is a truly captivating show from Studio Ghibli.
Key the Metal Idol
Incredibly engrossing tale of a young robot, Mina Tokiko ("Key" as she's known to her friends), who struggle to become human in this modern and more cerebral take on 'Pinnochio'. This series features a level of writing and story-telling that is very rare in any series, animated or not.
Wings of Honneamise
The first major project tackled by GAINAX, this movie's budget nearly destroyed the fledgling company before it even had a chance to establish itself. Complex story about an Earth-like society's struggle to launch man into space, the intricacies of this 'what-if' scenario is a wonderful feast for the imagination. Animation quality that's difficult to rival, even today!

But these aren't the only items that didn't make the list... Several titles appeared on 'T.H.E.M. Anime Reviews' list as well.

Curious about which titles made the common list, but didn't make the cut-off? Well, here's the ones that just barely missed getting in:

Battle Angel
Patlabor Movies 1 & 2
Robot Carnival
Ninja Scroll
Vampire Princess Miyu OAV series
Ranma 1/2 - TV 1st season
Slayers - TV 1st season
