What's New at the Café

Do you know of a site that's about to go down? Does it have information that should be preserved on the web? Let us know, and we'll save what we can!

You can also help us out by keeping your eyes open for any anime-related events or articles. Clubs and convention-goers -- don't forget our events calendar page! If your organisation has something up and coming, let us know!

  • June 6

Okay! Real world's been getting in the way of any major updates this week, but in the pipeline for mid to late June is a server move for the Cafe. E-mail, forms, and the encyclopaedia's search engine might not function properly during and just after the move as we clean up scripts. (That includes the contest form so be forewarned!) As a result, I'll be holding off any serious updates until post move. Hopefully this will be finished fairly quickly. The good thing is that the move will give me a lot more space to play with for the site as well as give me more e-mail addresses. Hopefully that will take care of the problem I've been having with Parent's Guide reviews being in different mailboxes.

Otherwise, there's now a new editorial up for this month, where we look briefly at subs vs dubs vs originals again. Also updated are the upcoming releases for anime and manga both, as well as the Cafe's video pick for the month of May. Looks like I'm going to have to get started on reviews again!

Lastly, there will be an Inu Yasha Movie released in December during winter holidays. So if you're in Japan at the end of December or in early January it might be worth taking a look!

  • May 28

Already the end of May! Where does the time go? This time, we have two new reviews for Card Captor Sakura episodes 10 and 11, as well as one review for Vampire Princess Miyu TV episode 1. As the Miyu reviews continue over time, I will be redoing the original TV reviews for eps 11-14. There are some new trivia questions for CCS and Miyu too.

Also up are a link to the monthly picks section which I've decided to continue with for the next while and see how they go. Will I end up with a "most mediocre" award one month?? Well, I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Also new is a genre based listing of the various titles reviewed here on the Cafe. Several titles are cross listed as they don't fit easily into one genre or another. This division will likely need more work as time goes by.

New reviews for the Parent's Guide to Anime include: Bio Hunter,

Congratulations go to Matt Herring of Pleasant Grove AL who was last bi-months winner of the Cafe Contest. Matt won a copy of YuYu Hakusho the Movie sub VHS.

Some updates to the new releases page are also up including a couple more pics from the folks at Anime Works. In the meantime, Blood the Last Vampire, which was recently reviewed here has been delayed until the end of August. Up on the contest page is a table of the review requests received in the contest entries to date as well as some of the suggestions for improvement for the site. Thanks to all those who have responded!

  • May 17

Results from the Cafe Poll are now up for respondants under 18 years of age. I almost forgot to put up the results regarding DVD! Of respondants, 42.82% own a DVD player compared to 57.18% who do not. The most common question regarding DVD was what "region" meant. Region coding - the area whose discs can be played in the player. For North America, that's region 1, Japan and Europe is region 2, etc. 8.22% of respondents own DVD players which are non-region specific, or non-region 1.

  • May 16

Results are finally up from the March / April Cafe Poll for "overall" and "18+" poll forms. Results for entrants under 18 years of age will be posted tomorrow (sorry it's taking so long this time!) It seems that people still much prefer subs over dubs in their anime! The results can be seen here. Otherwise, to all contest entrants, please ensure that your e-mail address is accurate! I can't contact you if it's not correct!

Also up is a new review, encyclopaedia entry and trivia questions for Blood The Last Vampire. This movie was just recently released on DVD in Japan and will have a North American release July 31 from Manga Entertainment so take a look!

Every now and again, we get recommendation requests here at the Cafe, and while I usually suggest people take a look at the Beginner's Guide to Anime for places to start, it sparked off this little page of monthly picks. It's still in its infancy so any feedback is more than welcome! (This page hasn't found a permanent home yet on the Cafe. Should it stay?)

Other updates include a brief update to the New Releases calendar as well as some additions to the Events Calendar. For those people in Calgary, a few classic anime titles will be showing at the Uptown this weekend. Information and times can be found at http://www.japancg-edmonton.org/events/nr20014.html. For Winnipegers, the same titles will be showing in Winnipeg at the Cinematheque Theatre next weekend. Information and times can be seen at the same link as the Calgary information (Japanese Consulate in Edmonton's site).

Lastly, the Parent's Guide to Anime review for Trigun has been updated. (I'm falling behind on the APGA again at the moment so patience please).

  • May 3

Quick little update for the Parent's Guide. 5 reviews have now been posted for Dragonball GT, Generator Gawl, Grave of the Fireflies, Tekken: The Motion Picture, and Vampire Princess Miyu (TV Series) so take a look!

  • May 1

It's Mei! Oops, rather that should be "May". Ahem! The Cafe Poll/Contest is now closed and hopefully I'll be able to get the results up in about a week. There were alot of poll entries this year so it could take a while to process the results. The winner is also "to be announced". The next contest, is now up and the prize this time is (surprise!) not a video. I'm waiting for results from the contest before going for another video. Rather we have an illustration collection book for Card Captor Sakura. For fans of Clamp and CCS, this book contains some beautiful colour artwork from the original manga series.

Also updated are the Editorial for this month where we take a look at the copyright issue, the mailbag has *finally* been updated after almost a year, as well as the release calendar so take a look!

Otherwise, more review updates will be coming up shortly for the Parent's Guide once the administrative updates are finished...

  • April 24

Several new reviews are up in the Parent's Guide to Anime including for Akira, Magic Knights Rayearth Season 2, Appleseed, Garaga, Lily C.A.T. and Dragoon. (All are recent reviews bringing me up to about a 1.5 week delay between receipt and posting. Lost souls are still pending...)

Also up are 3 new reviews for Yamino Matsuei (Descendents of the Dark) as well as Meitantei Conan Hitomi no Naka no Ansatsusha (Captured in Her Eyes) the fourth Conan movie, so take a look!
