I watched the first volume and thought it was all right. I watched the second volume and thought it was excellent. I watched the third volume and knew that I was seeing Something Special -- and then I went and bought all three tapes. Almost as interesting as the captivating characters and interactions is the gradual shift in tone throughout the series: from almost annoyingly silly to intensely serious to tear-jerkingly poignant by the end. It's happy, it's sad, it's silly, it's serious, it's melodrama in places and sheer poetry in others -- and I love every minute of it. And I'll always have a slight crush on Noriko Takaya. ;^)

I don't care what anyone else says about this 6-part series, this entry by Hideaki Ano's GAINAX studios is already a classic in my mind. Wonderful mix of mecha action, pseudo-science and character development in the most basic of melodramas, Japanese style. (Don't let Raphael's infatuation with Takaya Noriko scare you away, either). If you're not touched by the final scene of the final episode, you're not human.
