What's New at the Café

Do you know of a site that's about to go down? Does it have information that should be preserved on the web? Let us know, and we'll save what we can!

You can also help us out by keeping your eyes open for any anime-related events or articles. Clubs and convention-goers -- don't forget our events calendar page! If your organisation has something up and coming, let us know!

  • October 1

Reviews for Now and Then, Here and There, Rurouni Kenshin OAV, Spriggan, and Furi Kuri (FLCL), and Ruin Explorers have now been added to the Parent's Guide to Anime. Also up are the Monthly Picks for the month of September.

  • September 30

One quick announcement today. Congratulations to Nicole of Harper Woods, MI, who was chosen as the winner in the Summer 2001 Fan Art Contest. It was really tough picking a winner! A special "thank you" to all who entered!

  • September 25

No real update per se as yet as we had an interesting past week as the message board got hacked. But we're now back up and running. Special thanks go to Michael - SysAdmin of Forumworld who hosts the board for getting us back up and running. Also, apologies to those folks whose registrations and messages were lost.

The folks from the Big Apple Anime Fest are saying that the anime fest will go ahead as planned in an effort to restore a sense of normalcy to Manhattan/New York. Details of planned events can be seen on their website.

The links section's manga page has been updated to include a link to Mizuto Aqua's Official Home Page. The Cafe Message Board icons are from her site.

Lastly, the anime new releases section has now been updated for domestic new releases.

Updates, updates and more half updates. Firstly, congratulations to Tran Nguyen who is last month's contest winner! Also up in the contest section is a scan of the prize for Sept/Oct., as well as all but a few remaining fan art contest's entries which have now been posted and can be seen here. If anyone submitted an entry by snail mail, please contact me at master@abcb.com.

Also up is a review for Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu episode 2. This series has definitely caught my attention and (thus far) is well worth a look for those seeking a fun comedy. This is one anime you simply cannot judge by it's cover. More trivia questions have also been added for Jungle.

Cover scans have been added for Ah Megamisama! the movie, Angelic Layer, Devil Hunter Yohko, Generator Gawl, Infinite Ryvius, Inu Yasha, Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu, Jubei-chan, Kami Kaze Kaitou Jeanne, NieA_7, Rurouni Kenshin, and Vampire Princess Miyu.

Other updates include more anime and manga listings for the month of Oct. Manga is looking especially thin right now, while North American domestic releases still need to be further filled out. Request lists have also been updated. Looks like I should try whittling that list down a touch... Lastly, the Cafe mailbag has also been updated. For simple questions, people will probably be best off using the message board.

A very bad choice of words on yesterday's update. Our sympathies and thoughts are with the many people in, or with loved ones in, the areas affected by the hijacked plane crashes in the U.S.

The following emergency numbers have been made available for those seeking information on loved ones in the affected areas:

    • In USA: 1-800-331-0075
    • In Britain: 020 7008 0000 (Foreign Office)
    • In Canada: 1-800-387-3124 (Canadian Foreign Affairs)
    • In Canada: 1-800-418-1111 (Canadian Red Cross)

More numbers to be listed as we find them (if available). Otherwise, please contact your local Foreign Affairs Office or Red Cross Agency to leave family information for tracing purposes.

To those people willing and able, there is a call for blood donations. Phone numbers to call to make appointments / get information are:

    • In USA: 1-888-256-6388
    • In USA: 1-800-GIVE-LIFE
    • In Canada: 1-888-236-6283

A Canadian Communications Advisory has been issued requesting people to restrict long distance calls in order to maximize phone line availability for emergency purposes.

People seeking information would be advised that news sites are straining under the information request load causing slowdowns throughout the 'net. However, good sites for information include:

To those looking to help. Donations can be given to:

    • American Red Cross: (800) HELP-NOW
    • Salvation Army: (800) SAL-ARMY
    • United Way New York: www.uwnyc.org
    • Your local chapters of the Red Cross, Salvation Army or United Way.

Last minute changes makes for a half an update again today. More to be posted tomorrow (barring any minor disasters). I suspect weekly updates will be too much to try for as we head into the fall and winter seasons though.

Some folks may be aware of the announcement from Disney that there are currently no plans to release any more of Miyazaki's works to video. As a result, an online petition was started and can be accessed here. How effective online petitions are, I'm not sure, but it's always worth a try. For those who are extremely serious about expressing their opinions to Disney and Buena Vista Home Video, would be best off sending a polite snail mail letter. Snail mail is still the most effective medium for being taken seriously for the statement it makes in the time taken to write.

As for updates... Fan art entries are finally up to date (up to Sunday). There are now 5 days remaining to enter the contest before "shimebi" (closing day). Also up is a review for Jungle wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu episode 1. Trivia questions for Jungle as well as Infinite Ryvius are also up. A few more updates to the releases calendars have also been added.

  • September 03

Hope everyone had a good long weekend! And I hope not too many kids are crying at being back in class, or that too many parents are gloating either! Anyhow, we finally have a review for the first episode of Mugen no Ryvius although the encyclopaedia and trivia pages will be a bit longer. For those who are watching spelling, Ryvius is a bit unusual in that the spelling in the series, and the spelling in the fan book may be different. Which to use?!

Also up is an addition to the Magic Knights Rayearth review in the Parent's Guide. No that's not all that's been received. More work to come there. Also, the last week's fan art contest entries haven't been posted yet. On the otherhand, the prize for the current bi-monthly contest has now been listed. Monthly picks and new releases for some manga has also been updated so take a look!

  • August 27

Okay, we're very behind in our updates for this week. However, up so far are several new contest entries on the Fan Art Contest Page. Also up are updates for upcoming releases in both North America as well as in Japan.

I missed updating the Parent's Guide last week, but will get it updated in the next few of days along with a new review for Infinite Ryvius. Also for later this week will be the changes to the feedback forms, just as soon as I find the coding information again...
