Monthly PicksOctober 2001Many folks out there have often asked what anime we suggest for those who are starting out in anime, or what anime would be good for those who like x, y, and z titles. While I usually suggest that people go to the Beginner's Guide to Anime for suggestions, here I'm going to give my personal choice for the month based on the videos that I watch. Some of the titles are new acquisitions while others are re-views. (compared to reviews of course!) So, on to the picks! Top VideoRurouni Kenshin OAVOh quite the toss-up between this and Blood, but the story wins out. For those looking for a good all-round animated story, this four part OAV makes for a very good watch. With a very good story, solid direction, a wonderfully haunting soundtrack, and some interesting animation / rotoscoping, Kenshin OAV embodies the best aspects of this series. Most IntriguingNoirWith a lot of suspense and mystery, this anime series shows a lot of promise for what's to come in future volumes. It's the story and direction which really pull this one and the animation and music aren't bad to boot. Very mysterious and intriguing, this is a show to watch for and see how it develops. Best MusicShoujo Kakumei UtenaThe first 13 episodes of Utena definitely has the best music of this TV series. Subsequent episodes lose out on musical acumen such that those who pick up CDs from the latter parts are sure to lose out in pure musical enjoyment when listening to the soundtrack. This series features a different battle song for each duel in the first two arcs and is a musical treat for those who like modern chorus / pop. Titles viewed:
